My blog has been neglected for the last 2 weeks due to the fact that I haven’t had time to post anything. I’ve been working on a secret Valentine’s Day gift for Holly, figuring out InDesign, helping my brother learn Sketchup, and learning to do some stone mason work.
Today I have some time, so I’m about to bombard the blog with updates. I’ve decided to begin with some photos I took in Toronto this weekend, while visiting with Ryan and Amber.
First is a photo of one of Canada’s most historic locations. It’s now a dance studio for kids, but before that it was where my favourite t.v. series was filmed.
Next, is everyone’s favourite pooch, Monty! I’ve missed this guy so much. He used to sit on the futon with me for hours, and lean against me while I was playing games. I miss cuddly pets.
Now on to the bloggings.
On the way home from Cubs last night, we were talking about Roan’s cars he needs to make – first a balloon car for school (to teach them physics), and now a Cub Car. I asked him if he had a plan for his balloon car, or if he was just going to wing it? Here’s how the rest of the conversation went:
Roan: Wing it? what’s wing it?
Me: You’ve never heard anyone use that phrase before?
Roan: I have.
Me: Any idea what it means?
Roan: It means you’re going off brain.
Me: Sounds good to me.
Last night Roan went to his first ever Cub Scouts meeting. During dinner, we were discussing what cub scouts do, and how he’d make new friends and learn fun things. He disagreed, and insisted it was stupid, and going to be as stupid as summer camp was. He was miserable the entire time, until we walked in the door, and he instantly made friends with a boy named Alejandro. Instantly his mood changed, and only moments after walking through the door, he was deeply focused on winning a game of one-on-one basketball (so focused that he didn’t even notice us leave).
Holly and I went to Williams for a drink and a strawberry-caramel waffle, and also to Zellers to find a present for the boys friend Josh, who turns 10 this weekend. We got him another Nerf gun (Roan and I got him one the other day, but it was small, and pretty cheap) and a sweet zombie-pirate card, then we headed back to the church to check on Roan.
When we got inside the church, we snuck upstairs and watched the last fifteen minutes of his first scout meet. They were playing basketball, then had to line up for inspection, then had a little circle meeting. When it was all done, I asked Roan how stupid Cubs was, and there is a video below of his response.
I also took a video of their game, which is about 5 minutes long, but definitely worth checking out. I need to add annotations to the clip, but I won’t have time until later. For now, enjoy it in it’s raw form and keep your eyes peeled for the “cartwheeler” and the “face-maker”.
*Annotations have been added to the video. Watch it.
Last night, Holly and I went to have dinner and drinks with her friend Paul. They decided to take me to the Falls and Firkin, in the Fallsview Casino. I’d never been before, but it was good. I had some crazy garlic bread, and an awesome veggie burger covered in mushrooms.
After dinner I took some pictures of the fountain they have there. It’s so cool looking, but seems really out of place at a casino. It totally looks like something you’d find in the engineering deck of the Enterprise, rather than amongst diaper wearing alcoholic grandparents and chain-smoking Asians.
I also saw a sign I had to take a picture of:
I haven’t seen these signs anywhere else in the falls, so I have to wonder what it is that makes ice fall from the sky at the casino. I realize it’s in close proximity to the actual falls, but I don’t see the Hotel across the street instilling fear in it’s patrons with promises of cold clear death from above.
One might think they’re just being overly cautious, but I think a better investment might have been a sign that says: Warning, ex-UFC fighters may flip out and beat people with hammers, then drive their pick-up truck through our front doors.
Since I got Holly addicted to killing Nazi Zombies, I’ve tried to expand her interest in games her and I can play together. Last week I downloaded a bunch of Xbox Live Arcade demos and had her try a few with me. We fell in love with an Indie game called I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1NIT!!!1.
It was only about $2 to buy ($1 if you’re American), and the entire game takes about 8 minutes to complete, but it’s 4 player co-op and tons of fun. The song from the game is awesome too. I keep getting it stuck in my head, and fell asleep singing it to myself last night. When I got up this morning, the first thing I did was download the song. I highly recommend watching the video, downloading the song, and then buying and playing the game.
It’s only downside, is the lack of online play. But for an 8 minute game, who cares.
