The new Kids in the Hall series just ended on Tuesday, and it was amazing. Holly and I figured out the killer and a lot of things that were yet to be revealed, over dinner at Boston Pizza. Less than a minute into the show, we knew we were right. I just spent a few minutes watching all the extended scenes and bloopers on the CBC site, and I read an interview Dave did with torontoist.com.

What other stuff have you got on the burner at the moment?
Actually Kevin and I are writing a pilot for Canadian TV right now. It’s for CanWest, I forget who the outlet is. I think Showcase. The premise is that Kevin and I were in a Tears For Fears–style band in the ‘80s, but we’ve hated each other for years. Our career ended when Nirvana came out and Kevin’s character, who wrote all the songs, has lots of money and lives well, and I’m broke and divorced several times. A bit of a middle-aged womanizer. But anyways, we decide to get back together and cash in on the nostalgia craze.
Anything planned for the whole troupe?
Well, I hope people like Death Comes to Town. We talked a bit about how if people like it, maybe we’ll do a movie together or do another mini-series with a different storyline. It all depends on if people like this series.

I really hope people loved the show as much as I did, because it would make me so happy to see them do another film. Brain Candy was genius.
Sunday night at the Mandarin, Roan was first to get his plate of food. He got his two favourites: perogies, and pizza. When I asked if those were his favourite things to eat, he said “Yup, and they’re both from Mexico!”. We all laughed and said Jon was probably the closest thing to something that came from Mexico at our table.
This morning I planned to write about this, but I prefer to have an image to accompany my text. Since Roan is home all week, I decided to go downstairs where he was killing zombies, and take a picture of him. It turns out he was waiting for me before he started killing, and was just jumping around acting tough with his Nerf guns. I asked him if he wanted to pose cool for a photo, and I got the image above.
After our photo shoot, we successfully linked up 3 teleporters, upgraded some guns, and survived 15 rounds of nonstop zombie invasion. Then, during an oatmeal lunch, we discussed the idea of creating our own zombie maps, and perks. I will attempt to upload it tomorrow, but it’s about 17 minutes in length, so I may have to chop it up into smaller clips.
This weekend I ate so much I’m pretty sure I eliminated any progress that may have been made during our trips to the Y last week. Friday night, Holly and I went out for Sushi, then I went and picked up Jon from the GO train. We came back here and played the God of War 3 demo, then some zombies, and finally some Bioshock2. Then Jon made me eat pizza.
The next morning Holly made us brownies, and muffins, and shared some of her raspberry macaroons with us. Most of the afternoon was spent playing Bioshock2 and some UFC Undisputed, then we decided to go for Indian buffet. I ate so many pakoras, and homemade cheese it was unreal. Then right after that, we drove all the way to St Catharines for Marble Slab. Later that night, Jon and I busted out the leftover muffins and brownies and did even more damage to our guts.
The next morning I woke up with a major tummy ache, dying to smoke some pot. We rolled up a huge blunt using some enormous cigars the Dude gave me, and I tried to harvest Adam from dead splicers while we smoked it. I nibbled all day at the leftovers from the previous days, and then when the boys came home we decided to go to the Mandarin. I ate a shit load of sushi rolls, some pizza, spring rolls, some rice, and lots of garlic broccoli! Then I topped it all off with a gigantic plate of dessert, which consisted of: cheesecake (covered in strawberry sauce), a waffle covered in bananas and strawberries, a sugar puff, and of course a fortune cookie.
Today I plan to eat nothing until after we go to the Y. Instead, I plan to hang out with the Roanster all day since he’s off for March break, maybe finish Bioshock2 (since it’s now two days late!!), and possibly model some more of James’ house – although I’m still waiting to hear back from him about what I’ve done so far.
Above is a rendering I did of one of my robots, using no light source other than what he emits. It looks pretty cool in my opinion, and it inspired me to try the same thing with some other robots.
I like the look of these. I think I will turn them into desktop / PS3 backgrounds. I also think I will stop modeling robots now. I love doing it, but there is no point. It’s all wasted time, and I gain nothing from it. I really enjoy having a creative outlet, but work is more important and I’m the only one who thinks any of these images are cool.
I might post one or two more robots here that I have already made – just haven’t posted, but that will be it for Robots, and the whole Angry Art portion of this blog.
It’s come to my attention recently that I waste too much time on things that don’t matter, and I agree. The Sketchup stuff, my bad habits, video games, and this blog all take away from time I could be working. I love all these things, but none of them help me get anywhere, so it’s time to start eliminating them. First the art – that’s going to be easy, then the blog. The two big ones I’ll deal with last.
Here is a rendering of my Starfleet Holly robot. It was really hard to make her eyes emit blue light. No matter how dark the colour was or how low I set the power, it seemed to always be too bright. Even these are too bright for me, but she does have really bright blue eyes in real life, so I suppose it’s not too inappropriate.
What is inappropriate however, is my love for her shiny robot bewbs. I want to motorboat the hell out of those metal melons!
I made this the other day, but have been too tired/lazy to post it. It’s my take on what happens when conjoined robot twins hate each other.
I wish I could afford the full versions of both Sketchup and Indigo, so I could make bigger/better images. I suppose I would also need a better computer if I had them though, so it’s moot. For now, I’m stuck making multiple images if I want to show details that are too small to see, but are still cool (in my opinion).
This is a second rendering I did of the twins. I like the twins. I was hoping the noose would show up a lot better, but it’s still too small.
I wish I could easily send this file to a rapid prototyper and have them print me off one for my desk. Actually, if it was that easy I’d probably have one of everything I model on my desk. I wonder how hard it is to convert these models to something that can be printed.
Here are some more renderings of my robots. Roan never got around to giving these guys back stories, so I’ll give it a shot.
This is Robot Goulet. He’s a sleazy lounge singer, and has contracted digital crabs multiple times. He shoots red ruffie laser beams from his eyes.
This is Blingbot 2.0. He’s a straight-up hustler, if ya don’t know. He produces gold floppies and kills pirates who make copies.
This is Granny Twopacks. She loves bingo and booze, and HGTV. She sleeps on a pile of losing Nevada tickets.
Here’s some renders I made of the Murder Machine. I unfortunately double copped out in this one – I never modeled a cockpit interior, so in order to hide that I painted the windows in a super glossy black, hoping it would look like tinted glass. It doesn’t.
I want to do a rendering of the Deathtruck as well, but I haven’t got around to it. The Deathtruck I coloured before is stuck on a drive in my old machine. I need to either hook that machine back up, or pull that drive and see what’s on it, but it’s much easier to just re-colour it.
When Roan saw this he said, “Whoa! That’s like, sooooo pro. Imagine we could have one of those?”. He meant made out of Lego, but I think I’d rather have one in real life. Right about now, I’d drive it into a bank.
Here are some renderings of my latest robot. It was featured here the other day, in a much more cartoon-y / spin-y fashion, but I thought it looked so cool after I put it through Indigo, I figured I would post these as well.
The colours didn’t turn out as well as I wanted on his body, but they turned out better than I expected on his tubes (is that green tea? rad fluid?) after I tweaked them slightly.
This was actually the first image I rendered, and as you can see the tubes weren’t quite as green, and didn’t emit as much of a glow. I adjusted the transparency level on the green (chartreuse to be exact!) and brightened it up a bit. I would have re-rendered this, but it took about 7 – 9 hours to render each image, and I have to use my computer for work. I also figure I can tweak some things in Photoshop later and possibly get the effect I was looking for.
This is the last image I rendered, and also the first image I have rendered of a robot’s backside. I wanted to show that his tubes actually went somewhere. I made him a little backpack thing and gave it some more green tubes.
He still needs a name and a back story, so maybe I’ll get Roan to help with that. My guess is he’ll name him something like “Spikehands”. I was thinking he should be bummed that no one ever wants massages from him. He’s a touchy-feely robot. Creepy.
This robot’s name is Bunchofkids. He’s angry, and he has an antenna he uses to control his kids. They spend most of their days attacking good guys, but after a while they just blow up. They don’t have to brush their teeth, or clean their rooms. They just roll around killing good guys where they find them. They come from the planet Sladoosh in a robot galaxy that is far from earth.
This robot’s name is Spirit, and he’s a guardian. He kills guys that go in a jail cell full of guns. The guys are on the opposite team and want to use the guns to kill the team of Spirits. His main weapon is the Spirit Staff, which he can use to stab, hit, or make the red part glow and hit you and you go flying, and it also shoots lasers out of it. He’s a young guardian warrior also from the planet Sladoosh.
This robot’s name is Spikey Sword. He’s a main boss, and his main weapon is called the Double Sided Spike Spear. He shoots lasers from his eye, and kills any zombies that come to his earth (planet). He has the power of time. He can freeze guys so he can just chop their heads off and stuff. He can also speed time up to make himself heal faster. He’s really smart at everything and the only toys he ever had are weapons.
This robot’s name is Timer, because he has a timer on him. His only job is to kill enemies. His enemies are good guys. He’s over a million years old and has never had kids, and he’s had the same job his entire life. He never gets in trouble because he’s a robot and he can kill guys. He can’t skate, because there is no ice where he’s from.
This robot’s name is Nagare. He’s a ninja and he kills guys like a total spazz. He goes around like ppfffffftt, wssshhhhh , thwckkk chaaaa, and he kills like 10 guys in 5 seconds. He’s super super fast, and he can also kill 50 guys in 10 seconds. He’s an only child, and all he has is his toys. His toys are also all weapons.
I had a bunch more robots made for this post, but at this point Roan got bored of this and wanted to go watch Gage play xbox. He promised to do more later, but I think by now he’s forgotten all about it.
I love how he still doesn’t get the difference between earth and planets (he thinks all planets are “earths”), and I’m shocked that he decided all robots are evil, and they all come from the same place. I was expecting more variety in their backgrounds, but apparently we’re taking the easy way out and making them all from the same place, with basically all the same attributes. Perhaps it’s my fault for colouring them too similar, or maybe it’s got to do with the fact that they are all just standing in limbo, and have no visual aids to help him create a back story. Either way, I had fun for the 20 minutes he spent with me.
I’m still trying to figure out the math regarding that ninja’s killing speed – if he kills 10 guys in 5 seconds, that’s easy: 2 guys/second. Now, 50 in 10 seconds works out to 5 guys/second. Does that mean between kill 1 and 10 he’s just warming up? Because if he can steadily kill guys at 5 MDK/second, then by the end of an 8 hour day he’d have killed 143 985 dudes. That’s like killing the entire population of St Catharines!! I know the perfect person he could start with too.
Here is a new robot I made last night. I decided to try exporting an animation I created within Sketchup, hoping it would result in what you see above. It wasn’t quite that simple, but after some (Z99 authorized) Googling, and a few more seconds of progress bar watching, I have the result I was looking for.
Wish I’d have played around with that function sooner. Could have made some neat animated robot comics, but now I have too much work to do. I’m off to make fabulous foundation details!
Also, I fucking love this dude and the little spin-y animation! I’m going to have to use Skindigo later and render a cool still image of him.
